The Art of the Thank You Note

“Thank you.”

One of the most beautiful phrases in the English language. Expressing gratitude, especially to other people, is a lost courtesy in today’s society. Yet, it is integral to strengthening relationships and forming connections. Studies show that people who are grateful and take the time to express that gratitude experience a greater sense of happiness and overall satisfaction with life. There are physical and psychological benefits to being thankful, and writing a thank you card is one of the simplest ways to get a little vitamin G(ratitude). Besides, who doesn’t like receiving a hand-written letter in the mail?

Writing a thank you note doesn’t have to be intimidating. You don’t have to fill every square inch of the card or turn it into a speech. All it takes is a bit of time and thought and three key parts to form the perfect thank you note!

Steps to Writing Thank You Notes

1. A Greeting – Address the person to whom you are expressing thanks and make a connection.

Example: “Dear Chrystal, I hope that you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas with your family this year!”

2. The Thank You – Be specific!

Example: “Thank you so much for the lovely scarf and hat that you mailed to me – the dark blue colour perfectly compliments my brand-new winter coat! The accessories have kept me cozy and warm throughout the deep freeze we are experiencing here!”

3. A Closing – Include a positive statement and your name.

Example: ” I can’t wait to visit with you in February! Love, Jill”

Of course, you can add more to fill out the card a little more, but using these three elements to structure each thank you card will ensure you cover the basics and don’t have to overthink the writing process!
